Ever get the feeling you spend too much time working from the book? Struggle to keep the kids motivated? Worried you aren’t preparing them for the exams? In this session we are going to address these issues by getting their heads up out of the book and back into the classroom. We will explore some practical ways to prepare for the Cambridge English: Young Learners, through activities encouraging positive interactions in the classroom, supporting our learners´ personal and emotional needs, as well as linguistic ones.

I have 25 years of teaching experience in EFL in Australia, Hong Kong, the UK and Spain. I have an MA in English for Specific Purposes from City University of Hong Kong where I worked as a Tutor in the English Language Centre and where I developed my knowledge of EAP and Testing. I have also worked on Summer EAP programmes at Brunel University and most recently at Newcastle University in the UK (with INTO). I now live in Gijon where I work for Lawton School with learners of all ages but particularly with adults preparing to do the Cambridge First Certificate and Advanced Certificate exams as well as in companies. I recently studied New Technologies in Teaching with the UNED and I have a great interest in this area. I am always interested to improve as a teacher and enjoy every opportunity to share with fellow teachers.

Learners often complain that they find their skill in Listening is rather lacking. Teachers may simply say that the key is to do more listening outside of class on an individual basis as well as working on specific strategies inside the classroom. However, for many learners progress can often seem quite slow. The aim of this talk is to revisit and clarify the different Listening strategies and to examine how learners can be encouraged to make the most efficient use of the many resources available to learners today.

What we'll try to do is show you some resources where you'll be able to accomplish a plethora of goals in a fun and comfortable setting: having students involved in the activities and focused, using what they already know as well as learning new material, making the most of collaborative learning. Mary Kay Maas

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and History Education and has been teaching English in Spain since 2004. Between Wisconsin and Asturias she has experience in just about everything: infants-primary-secondary, public and private, gifted and special education. She has taught numerous classes and workshops in all 4 of the CPR's in Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés and Nalón-Caudal. She is currently teaching an extended version of this workshop at the CPR in Avilés. She runs a small company, MK Educational Services, where she teaches executive, in-company English and provides immersion experiences in the USA. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons 6 and 7, and touring with her band, Memphis Belle.
